The Daily Leaf and Green Leaf Lab have partnered together to promote the uniqueness of Terpenes; the smells and tastes of Cannabis, with our
TRIBUTE TO TERPENES: UNITING CANNABIS SCIENCE WITH CANNABIS CONSUMPTION
We all know how important Terpenes are to the pleasure and enjoyment of cannabis. Our goal is to bring attention to the value and importance of terpenes. Our collaboration unites the subjective blind “testing” of cannabis combined with scientific analysis.
Green Leaf Lab will perform a terpene analysis and choose the terpene profiles that seem most unique or stand out of all the samples submitted to the lab for a designated bi-weekly period. The Daily Leaf will blind “test” the sample, without being able to review the terpene profile, the name of the strain, or the customer information.
The subjective “test” categories to be judged upon will be the following:
1) Aroma: Enjoyment of smell, “dankness”, smell without squeezing flower, and smell after squeezing flower, overall aroma high and low notes.
2) Taste: Flavor in relation to smell, inhale flavor, exhale flavor, aftertaste, high notes, low notes.
3) Cure: Smoke-ability of the strain, smoothness, overall quality of cure job.
4) Appearance: Trim job, crystallization.
Each category will be weighed equally. The grading scale will be 0-10, with 10 being the highest. All four categories will be added together for the overall results. After judging is complete, The Daily Leaf will notify Green Leaf Lab of the samples that had the highest markings and the most interesting terpene profiles. Green Leaf Lab will release the test results, including customer name, strain name, terpene analysis and cannabinoid profile.
This analysis will be brought to the public bi-monthly, with the first installment today. Green Leaf Labs and The Daily Leaf are happyto conduct these tests to gain further awareness to the public about terpene’s and the various profiles cannabis strains embody.
Now let’s get down to it!
Skunk by Christopher Cox. 24.02% THC | 1.66%CBD | .23% CBN | .28% CBG | .11% CBC
Blind Cognitive Test: 34 out of 40.
Cure: 9, Appearance: 9, Aroma: 8, Taste: 8
Terpene Analysis: With higher levels of Caryophyllene, Humulene & Ocimene it’s no doubt that this strain had an amazing aroma. The bud was nicely manicured, had very light bright orange hairs, and had slight cheesy undertones. During the blind taste test we were left feeling as if this flower was a sativa, giving off energy and uplifting vibes.
Academic by High Noon Farms. 25.73% THC | .66% CBD | .21% CBN | .25% CBG | .10% CBC
Blind Cognitive Test: 32 out of 40
Cure: 9, Appearance: 8, Aroma: 8, Taste: 7
Terpene Analysis: Interestingly enough, the day before sampling this strain I worked my body with a 10 mile hike. Waking up feeling tight, I smoked a doob of this on my porch and about 30 minutes later felt more relaxed and at ease. In my notes this strain was described as leaving me initially feeling dazed, focused, and content. With extremely high levels of Myrcene (10.89mg) it makes a lot of sense.
Cinex by Christopher Cox. 20.52%THC | .56%CBD | .43% CBN | .42% CBG | .23% CBC
Blind Cognitive Test: 25 out of 40
Cure: 8, Appearance: 6, Aroma: 6, Taste:5
Terpene Analysis: With a strong mixture of terpenes capping off at a total of 13.11mg within this particular pheno, we were surprised that this flower did not jump out and smack us in the nose when analyzing its’ aroma. This Cinex left us feeling that we could use a little more to get a desired feeling.
Quantum Kush by High Noon Farms
Blind Cognitive Test: 36 out of 40
Cure: 10, Appearance: 10, Aroma: 8, Taste: 8
Terpene Analysis: This strain was absolutely beautiful. It was perfect in every sense of how you would want your flower to look, smell, and taste. After tasting and then seeing the high levels of Limonene and Pinene, it all makes sense as to why it would leave us thinking what we thought. As far as effects go, the words written down after initial consumption was: slight chill…mildly creative. When checking Leafly’s description of Quantum Kush the 5 top qualities are uplifted, euphoric, relaxed, creative & happy. We would say this is 100% grade A Quantum Kush..now where can we buy some more?
Trainquil Elephantizer by Illumination Farms. 19.13% THC | .89% CBD | .21% CBN | .26% CBG
Blind Cognitive Test: 27 out of 40
Cure: 8, Appearance: 6, Aroma: 5, Taste: 8
Terpene Analysis: While this strain did not score as high as others, it still had us feeling like we were ready to start the day and ready for action. This particular strain came in as a dense nug that did not offer that much smell. After looking over its’ terpene profile we noticed the higher than normal levels of Linalool which is one of the most widely used terpenes to reduce stress.
Trainwreck by Illumination Farms 22.38% THC | 1.41% CBD
Blind Cognitive Test: 32 out of 40.
Cure: 8, Appearance: 8, Aroma: 8, Taste: 8
Terpene Analysis: With around 1mg of Limonene, Ocimeme, and Pinene you can tell why Trainwreck usually has a distinct smell that catches the nose, and this particular pheno was on par with our other past experiences with Trainwreck. During the blind test, this strain was described as being similar to a strain that we can’t get enough off, Gelato, which is known for its’ pungent smell and calming affects. With 4mg of myrcene it will most def. leave you relaxed.
Gaia Gold by Little Farma LLC 25.29% THC | 1.23% CBD
Blind Cognitive Test: 24 out of 40.
Cure: 6, Appearance: 6, Aroma: 6, Taste: 6
Terpene Analysis: One of the most common misnomers when deciding a strain to purchase is correlating a THC percentage with how high you think you will be getting. This Gaia Gold weighed in at 25.29% THC, a pretty high THC content to the point one would think that the experience would be out of this world. Interestingly enough that was not the case. We found that we needed to smoke a lot of this flower to get a buzz and feel any effect.
Blue Dream by Green Lightning 28.67% THC | .72% CBN | .78% CBG | .92% CBC
Blind Cognitive Test: 34 out of 40.
Cure: 8, Appearance: 9, Aroma: 9, Taste: 8
Terpene Analysis: One of our favorite samples of this first round, this Blue Dream pheno packed the perfect punch for a good night sleep. While most Blue Dream will lean more towards a sativa side, this was leaning the other direction and gave our blind taste sampler the feeling that this is a great strain for bedtime. With high levels of alpha and beta pinene, Blue Dream, has an interesting molecular build that ultimately results in better memory. Pinene also has the ability to decrease paranoia when consumed in large quantities.
Critters Cookies by Boring Weed 24.73 THC | .71% CBD | .17% CBN
Blind Cognitive Test: 29 out of 40.
Cure: 7, Appearance: 7, Aroma: 8, Taste: 7
Terpene Analysis: When first presented with this particular flower we thought the world of it…it was a great looking strain with a pungent smell. The smell is backed by high levels of limonene reaching close to 3mg, and caryophyllene oxide capping off close to 2mg. The actual feeling this strain gave us was not as overwhelming. It left us with a mild high with no euphoria.
Holy Grail by Green Lightning 26.80 THC | .79% CBD | .68% CBN | .73% CBG | .74% CBC
Blind Cognitive Test: 26 out of 40.
Cure: 5, Appearance: 5, Aroma: 9, Taste: 7
Terpene Analysis: So here is an interesting strain. We have a flower here that has a lot of great properties, totaling 19.75mg of terpenes, with high levels of limonene, myrcene, linalool, humulene, and caryophyllene oxide. Yet, when blindly analyzing this Holy Grail, we were left feeling that its’ appearance, cure and taste were nothing to write home about. It did have amazing after affects, which would make sense due to its cannabinoid profile, but would not have us jumping out of our seats to purchase.
