All of us know it’s a definite possibility to overdo any good thing, even if that thing getting high! Using cannabis responsibly requires setting some boundaries, having discipline, and sometimes simply just saying no. Recreational marijuana should be something that enhances one’s life, not make it less pleasurable. Not all things are not best experienced high!

Every stoner has a different lifestyle and tolerance level, but here are some signs that you might be smoking way too much. Don’t get this confused with a checklist that determines your stoner fate or that if you get four yeses you must check into rehab! But if a question speaks to you, maybe it’s time to consider cutting down.

  1. Is your recreational cannabis consumption interfering with or affecting your relationships?

There are many different dynamics between people who love to smoke and those who prefer alcohol – or even some that prefer no intoxicants at all. Sometimes it’s best to be 100% present when communicating with your partner or a friend or even a family member, so be careful not to get hop on the phone with your mom right after smoking. Consider this: Would you get along better with someone you love if you didn’t consume so much?

  1. Is it negatively affecting your overall productivity?

Is it slowing your thoughts down when you want them to be super sharp? You may be smoking joints for inspiration but what’s the use if you keep falling asleep? For some of us, cannabis brings even greater clarity and focus; for others (perhaps most of us), it’s just the exact opposite

  1. Does your need to get high stop you from doing things you would otherwise enjoy?

That is, do you have the fear of not being high? Would you turn down a once in a lifetime job or much needed vacation if you couldn’t continue to toke up? Do you analyze each situation as to whether or not you can get stoned?

  1. Is it impacting your memory?

When you’re stoned, it’s harder to come up with memories. But it’s so tempting to reach for the bong when chilling in front of the TV, but once you light up, you might forget the plot of the movie you’re watching (until you fall asleep), and in a few days, you may well forget that you’ve watched it at all.

  1. Are you more exhausted than you’d like to be?

Are you yawning all the time or at inappropriate times? Are you tired after a day of not much overall physical activity? Do you really need nine hours’ sleep — or more?

  1. Are you breaking your personal pot rules?

All stoners have them. Some of us swear to the ganja gods that we won’t drive or go to work or visit mom when stoned. Then all of a sudden we find we’re making exceptions: it’s only a mile, it’s Friday, they’ll never even notice. You made those rules for a reason right? Breaking them means you’re losing control when it comes to your cannabis use.

  1. Do you feel guilty about smoking?

There’s still a social stigma to getting stoned, by now you’ve probably blown right past it. But maybe you still tend to beat yourself up about how much you smoke from time to time. Imagine you acknowledge that you should smoke less, but you just can’t seem to cut back. Of course it makes you feel guilty, which is never a good feeling. You have a choice. Get over the guilt or … well, you know the rest.

  1. Is your recreational cannabis use cutting into your budget?

Whether it’s legal or not, marijuana can get pretty expensive. If you get high two or three times a day, you can easily spend $300 a month. Is this the best way for you to spend $3,600 a year?
