Texas is known as a deep-red state with archaic cannabis laws, but progress is being made in small steps. The first Texas dispensary is now open in the lone star state. However, only a select few patients will be able to procure the medicine.

On Thursday, Compassionate Cultivation will open its doors to its customers to become the first licensed cannabis oil dispensary in Texas. It is located just outside of Austin in Manchaca, the Dallas Observer reported on Monday.

The news comes after a 6-year-old girl, who suffers from epilepsy, became the first Texan to receive medical marijuana prescription.

However, the dispensary will only sell one product, which has very low-THC, to a limited group of customers.

THC is the psychoactive component in cannabis that gives people the feeling of being high.

So for the only people who are eligible for medical marijuana prescriptions are the ones with intractable epilepsy. And in order to get the cannabis oil for their treatment, they have to visit one of 17 state-approved doctors before visiting the dispensary.

Morris Denton, Compassionate Cultivation’s CEO, is happy that Texas has allowed some forward movement on medical marijuana.

“Ultimately, what needs to happen is that Congress needs to change the law,” he told the Observer last month as he was readying to harvest his company’s first cannabis crop.

The Texas Legislature had rejected to pass a more expansive medical marijuana law that would allow cannabis with THC. THC can be helpful for veterans for example who suffer from PTSD, and it can be beneficial to cancer patients.

Denton said he’s ready to expand into other products and services whenever the state Legislature or the federal government loosens the reins.

In early January, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions annulled an Obama-era policy, bringing federal intervention within states that have already legalized marijuana.

The move was a big blow to the U.S. marijuana market. However, Vermont, which has a Republican governor, legalized weed afterward, and pro-medical cannabis trend is slightly progressing in Taxes.
